REVIEW: YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils

Hello lovely readers! I hope you are enjoying your weekend, wherever you are in the world!

This weekend's review from me is on the YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils, which for those of you who don't speak French means 'Voluminous False Lash Effect Mascara'. It retails at £25.00, which for a mascara is definitely on the pricey, very high-end side, so you would definitely expect it to be mind-glowingly good.

This was recently gifted to me by my boyfriend's sister as a late birthday present, and it's an item that has been on my wishlist for a long time now, so I was ecstatic to receive it as I'm sure you can imagine! It's a product that I've never tried before and always wanted to, because I've heard such good things about it. And it certainly did not disappoint!

Obviously reviews are about how good the actual product is, but it wouldn't be right for me to not highlight how absolutely incredible the packaging is. When you are spending that much on a mascara, I personally think every aspect of the product should feel completely luxurious, and packaging for me plays an important part of this. Aesthetically, the YSL Mascara is extremely pleasing to the eye, and it especially speaks to me due to the gold and rose gold theme of the packaging! With a gold lid and rose gold bottom, and then a slightly contrasting logo, this product is something that I would happily keep out on show at all times purely for decoration purposes.

Now for the contents - this product really blew me away. I like high-end mascaras as it is - my normal go-to is Benefit They're Real or Benefit Roller Lash, which at £19.00 are slightly cheaper than the YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils, but are really great mascaras. However, I must say that this mascara has taken my lash game to a whole new level, and I definitely am loving it.

To give you a bit of context, my eyes are quite small in relation to my face (or at least I think so) my lashes are short and very thin, and also quite pale, so the following are things that I look for in a mascara as a must-have feature:

  • Lengthening - I prefer a longer lash as mine are so short; I feel like this makes my eyes look a lot bigger and more of a focus on my face rather than being lost.
  • Volumising - because my lashes are so thin, this is a must-have to enhance the look of my lashes and again draw attention to my eyes.
  • Separating - Because my lashes are short and pale, I want to make it look like I have as many lashes as possible, so the more separation a mascara gives me the better, because it will define each individual lash, rather than pushing them together and making me look like I have hardly any lashes!
  • Non-clumping - I hate mascaras that clump. But really, I don't know anyone that would like this!
  • Very black - because my lashes are so pale, I want something that will make them as black as possible to again draw attention to my eyes and make them look bigger. Especially because a lot of the time I would just throw mascara on on it's own, so it needs to be black enough to make my eyes stand out more on my face.

I instantly liked the brush - I prefer a non-plastic brush as they hurt my eyes and I feel like sometimes they can really pull at my lashes, so I was pleased to see that this mascara has a nice brush. It is quite dense which is great for adding volume to the lashes, and the bristles are fairly short which I found gives excellent coverage of the actual product during application. Having short bristles also means that you can really get the tiny little lashes in the corner of your eye, which further enhances the eye more than other mascaras I have used.

I'm not suite sure why, but I decided to smell this mascara as I opened it, and was really surprised - it has a really nice scent to it! Almost vanilla and floral, really really nice. I can't say I've ever had a mascara that has a scent to it, but I think that just adds to the luxuriousness of the product.

During application, I noticed that this mascara was not hugely wet like some mascaras, but not a very dry formula either, it is almost the perfect in between! This just meant it was really easy to apply, and even with one coat it looked incredible, however I did apply a second one. I am pleased that I only had to apply two coats to get to the look I achieved in the picture at the beginning of this post - with my Benefit mascaras I have to absolutely pile it on which can sometimes lead to clumping if I'm not careful.

I really loved the look of this mascara on because it fulfilled all of my needs stated above - it's super black, really lengthening and volumising, yet not clumpy at all. It really separated my lashes as well which made them frame my eye in a much nicer way, and as mentioned above I really liked the fact that I could use the smaller bristles to reach the lashes towards my inner corner, something which I can never normally do. It made my eyes look amazing - it really framed them and enhanced them, making them look a lot bigger and also making me look more awake which is definitely something I find a difficult task these days!

Something I struggle with when using cheaper mascaras is that they can smudge under my eyes and make me look extremely tired, or wear off during the day. I didn't have that problem at all with this mascara - I wore it for more than 12 HOURS! And it absolutely did not budge at all. I even had a two-hour nap and when I woke up it was still as perfect as if I had only just applied it!

In conclusion, this mascara is absolutely amazing and I don't want to ever use anything else! I wouldn't necessarily use it every day because of the price, and I don't think I would waste it if I were going to put a pair of falsies on the top, however I can see me getting a lot of use out of this mascara. This mascara would be absolutely perfect for people who want a longer, thicker, false lash effect but don't want to wear falsies. I would 100% recommend this mascara, even though it is fairly pricey, in my opinion it is worth the money. This is hands down the best mascara I have EVER used!

I hope you guys enjoyed this post; let me know in the comments what your favourite mascara is.

Until next time,

Sarah xx
